Why is Phytoplankton important to you and your saltwater aquarium?

Phytoplankton (micro-algae), are at the bottom (or form the base) of the marine food chain and are a vital source of nutrients for your reef inhabitants. They are an excellent food source for all growth stages of bivalve mollusks, larval stages of some crustacean species, and very early growth stages of some fish species. Phytoplankton are used to produce mass quantities of zooplankton (rotifers, copepods, brine shrimp) which serve in turn as food for larval and early-juvenile stages of crustaceans and fish.

Brad and I have started cultivating phytoplankton for the use in our own tanks. The amount we harvest every two weeks is enough to sell some of it.
If you have any questions about phytoplankton or what it will do to benefit your salt water aquarium or you would like to buy some just let one of us know

frogspawn has a algae that lives inside the skeleton that has to get good light. It gives allot to the fs as energy.

Thanks guys, So you don't think that I could have to much light then?

I appreciate the help

Yes Brad is correct less flow. But do not reduce light. The coral will not open all the way in high flow because it my injure itself on its Skeleton. Low to med flow and each one likes one over the other so you will have to play with moving it aroud a bit till it really opens up.

Lighting sounds good. I have discovered Frogspawn like medium light with medium flow.

It sounds like the Alkalinity is a little low. I keep mine between 3.5dKh and 4dKh. I think 300ppm would be equivelant to 3dKh. Try adding about a table spoon of baking soda if you do not have any buffer and retest the Alk. after about 4 hours.
It also sounds like you are doing too many water changes. 10 to 12 gallons is about 25%-30% water change and that is a lot every week. Try cutting you water changes back to 10% every week and a 25% every 3 months.
Figure 48 gallons minus rock and sand displacement for about 35 gallons of water plus a sump if you have one.
