My friend converted his 180 gallon reef tank into a cichlid aquarium, and on September 1, 2009, he gave me so much of his live rock that I couldn't fit all of it into the 28 gallon tank I setup to receive it. He also gave me one Yellow Tang, one Purple Tang, a Tomato Clown, a Green Chromis, a Watchman Goby, five Pyjama Cardinals, and about six damselfish. Two of the damselfish were put in my other 28, with a pair of Blue Devils.
The next day, I ordered a large hang-on-tank refugium from…

Figuratively speaking I was away, anyway. I just haven't been doing much with the aquarium, and it shows. I had a brown slime outbreak that turned into a black slime outbreak, and over the course of repeatedly cleaning my 28, two nights ago I discovered two starfish and a chiton. Today I did a big water change and put in about 4 lbs. of new live rock and replaced some aragonite sand. I am planning to buy an external refugium soon, after I get an internet order delivered.

Well I decided to use a 55gal for my DT, and a 38gal for my sump/fuge. the fun part is designing the fuge. I got a good idea for the fuge size. But It's the DT drain side that the skimmer will be at, I just haven't figured out what size that section gonna be. I know I'm gonna build either a 2 x 2 or a 3 x 3 column that the DT drain pipe will dump in, to fill the skimmer section up after it passes thru a bubble trap.
I know it might be a overkill but I'm planning on putting 3 bubble traps in the…

Gonna start out with a 10 gallon nano reef with a 20 gallon sump/fuge. I would need to design the layout for the sump/fuge for this tank. I have to decide on how much live sand to use in the 10 DT and in the fuge. Planning on putting in about 7 or 8 pounds of base rocks then about 5 to 7 pounds of LR. and in the fuge, I'll probably will have between 1/2 lb to 1 1/2 - 2 lb in there. There's one reason for the 10 nano, and that is get a goos start on purple coralin algae. This way, I can propeagate…

I spent the day with a couple of fellow reefers down at World Wide Corals today (www.worldwidecorals.com) and I picked up some VERY nice frags. I added an ORA red planet, rainbow monti, candlelight concert, orange sertosa, romelles rainbow, and a couple others I'm not of the name of!! We had a great time and I can't wait for them to grow out so I can share them with the local group!!

I found this rather disturbing new money making scheme that some guy came up with. It's called the iPond which is an Ipod speaker that doubles as a (very) mini fish tank. It's so small that a fish can barely turn around inside and I think it's outrageous that this is being sold. Appearantly some animal rights group is trying to stop it, but they have sold out and people are going ga-ga for it (read the full story here

I sold my house so now I have to tear down my tanks to move them. This is going to be a huge task. Luckly I have a few friends with tanks that will be able to babysit my corals and fish. My plan is to start moving corals this week to one friends 200G tank. About a week before we close on our house I will tear down the rest of my 90 G reef. I plan on moving the fish to a few spare tanks. I will attempt to tear the 107G cylnder down the day after we close move reset it up in the same day. It is an…

Hello, just wanted to let everyone know about me and how long this tank has been setup. The tank has been up and running for just over a month now and is doing really great. Before I setup the tank, I made sure I had enough liverock to help cycle the tank. I got about 40lbs of liverock and 40lbs of livesand at the same time. Once they all were add and the water was added, my tank cycle in just two days. I learned to cycle like this because my first tank I ever had took almost 2 months to cycle.…
