As with almost every Friday, I take the girls to the Local Fish Store right after work. It is a good way for me to get started on my weekend and really unwind and relax. I was not really planning on buying anything other than a fish for my tank. I just like to stop by and see what new stuff the store picked up earlier in the week, especially before the weekend. That is when most of the fish and goods are sold. So I like to get a step ahead and see if there is something that I want for my tank.

While I was in the store, I was chatting with Kevin and he said that he got my email from the other day. I sent him a picture of my tank that I took 2 weeks ago and he seemed rather impressed that everything was going extremely well. I asked Kevin what kind of fish would go well in my tank that wont reek havoc. He was showing me some Blennys that might work out really well. I was actually looking at some Pseudos and Royal Grammas but I didn't want to shell out the money today and I wanted to make sure the fish were going to be very hardy. Kevin said the the Pseudos and the Royal Grammas tend to be a bit aggressive with fish that are the same size or smaller.

I used to have a Royal Gramma when I had my Reef Tank back in 1990 and it was always quite a calm fish. Then again, the tank was 55 gallons and I had much larger fish in my tank at the time. My tank now is 29 gallons and I only have 2 clowns in there. I want to make sure nothing happens to these clowns because they are very special to me since they were an expensive gift from my Uncle. I always like Blennys and Gobies because they like to stay at the bottom and are pretty funny to look at!! I do know that there are some Gobies and Blennys that are not Reef Compatible and will eat SPS and LPS corals. These are of course the ones that I am trying to avoid at all costs!!

Kevin showed me a Scooter Blenny, Bi-color Blenny, Lawnmower Blenny, Yellow Clown Goby and a few others. He said that these will be good fish to have in a reef tank because they will eat algae off the rocks and move the sand around a bit. This was a job exclusively for the Nassarius Snails but there are not that many in my tank to do the job efficiently. So, after consultation with my daughters, they wanted the Scooter Blenny and the Bi-color Blenny. They were both around the $10.00 mark each, give or take a few bucks. My daughters already named the fish before we left the store.

The Scooter Blennys name is Preminger. My daughters named him Preminger from their movie "Barbie's Princess and the Pauper". Preminger is the evil trollish looking character that is bent on destroying the Barbie kingdom. What's funny is that the Scooter Blenny looks identical to Preminger. What a funny name for a funny looking fish!!

The Bi-Color Blennys name is Charlotte. I am sure that you are aware that the name is from the movie Charlotte's Web.

At the fish store, I was also looking around for corals, mushrooms and polyps. I was looking for something small, like small frags because I have a lot of good sized pieces in my tank. So I would like to get smaller frags to fill in the bald spots on the rocks. There was a nice rock with some Neon Blue Mushrooms on it. I think there was about 5 mushrooms on this particular rock along will some macro algae and some hair algae. The hair algae will be great for the Blennys, a good snack for them, like an aquatic salad!!! Anyways, I asked Kevin about the blue Mushrooms and he said he would give them to me for $15.00. That is a very fair price considering the vivid neon blue color of these mushrooms.

Anyways, I chatted with Billy on the phone when I was at the store. I told him the fish I picked up and he told me something rather interesting. He said the the saltwater community fish tanks have a very low salinity level in comparison to the salinity level in my reef tank. Billy said that a majority of stores keep the salinity level in saltwater community tanks at around 1.018 or so. To me, this was quite shocking!!! This could have explained the reason why the Forktail Blenny died. So Billy told me that the acclimation process should take no less than a few hours. Considering that reef tanks have a very high salinity level, I have to slowly acclimate the fish to a salinity level of almost 8 points!! If that ain't stressful, then I don't know what is!!!

So Wish me Luck!!!!
