Looks like my Prized Maxima Clam committed suicide last week. Unfortunately, it took about a week for it to die. The clam held on as long as it could before the good Lord took him home. Basically, what happened was that the Clam decided to move from a spot on the live rock to a space right below it. Well, it didnt quite make it there and it landed into the arms of my long tentacle anemone. From there, the damage was done, I hate to say it!!

When I got up for work first thing in the morning, I found that the clam was shut as tight as a frogs butt. There was a lot of mucous coming out of the top of the clam and my snails were all over it, especially the Nassarius Snails. I know when something is dead or dying, that is when the Nassarius Snails rise from their watery grave and feast. So I knew the poor clam was history. I was pretty upset because I really love my clam.

So I guess the term "live and learn" is the name of the game and is something I will never repeat again. I will make sure that I place the clam in a location to where it will have zero chance of this ever happening again. I never planned on aquiring an anemone but when my uncle bought me my mated pair of Perc Clowns, it came with the long tentacle anemone. So I made sure I tried to put it in a location of my tank so it wouldnt cause any harm. Unfortunately, long tentacle anemones and anemones in general will go where they want until they find a place they are comfortable with.

When I first aquired my long tentacle anemone, I made sure that I allowed it to go where it wanted before I decided to buy anything else for the tank. This did well until I bought my metal halide lighting. Then the long tentacle anemone decided to move to a new location where it stung the heck out of my Xenia. I thought for sure the Xenia was dead but instead of throwing it out, I decided to see if it would make a comeback. Thank the Lord that it did. Well, from that point on, the long tentacle anemone has not moved at all. So I aquascaped my reef tank with the long tentacle anemone being the center of the tank.

Since starting my tank a few months ago, I had a few mishaps such as my Open Brain Coral falling and dying, some dead Zoanthid polyps and yes, my prized Maxima Clam dying. Things will die, that is a part of life but I am doing whatever it takes within my power to make sure that mishaps are minimized!! This started with gluing all my live rock down with epoxy to prevent falling rocks and what not. So far it has worked, unfortunately I cannot glue a clam down. They will go where they want to go, so now it will be even more important to put the clams and other critters in locations where accidents will be minimized.

I ordered 2 more clams today and I hope to have them here on Thursday. I ordered another Maxima Clam and decided to try a Crocea. I ordered them from Dr's. Foster & Smith's LiveAquaria.com. I heard some good stuff about them along with buying livestock from Marine Depot. I will let you know how that turns out.
